As a judge, I have seen that traditional justice does not always lead to the outcomes our community needs. Restorative justice focuses on accountability and behavior change. It gives a person an opportunity to right their wrongs and give back to the community. It's much more than incarceration and fines. In my experience, that kind of accountability is more meaningful than punishment alone. It also increases public safety in the long run by changing harmful behavior.
Restorative justice is about recognizing the humanity in everyone who comes through the courtroom. It balances accountability with compassion and allows room for real change that enhances public safety. It is not right for every case, but when it fits, it can make a lasting difference.
